Outdoor Film Screening with musical introduction from Kíla
“Wonderful family animation, rich in Irish folklore. A gorgeous, almost painterly tale of two siblings trying to reach home, but waylaid by witches, owls and faeries. 5/5”. The Guardian
Special outdoor screening of the Oscar nominated animated film directed by Tomm Moore for Cartoon Saloon. After their mother’s disappearance, Ben (David Rawle) and Saoirse are sent to live with their Granny in the city. When they resolve to return to their home by the sea, their journey becomes a race against time. The film will be introduced by members of Kíla who will perform some musical excerpts from the film.
Kíla had collaborated with the French composer Bruno Coulais (Microcosmos, Coralline, Amazonia) on Cartoon Saloon's Oscar nominated ‘The Secret of Kells’ and when Cartoon Saloon was making their next animation being 'Song of The Sea' they asked them to collaborate again.
“Bruno had composed some pieces that he wanted us to play on and he also asked us if he could use some of the pieces we had already composed. When we got into the studio together we assembled all our wind, skin and stringed instruments and Bruno took to drawing out musical motifs from us. Once he was happy with the direction he'd begin to conduct a bodhrán roll here, a low bass rumble there a whine from the fiddle or a thrill from the whistles. He later said that we were 'his Gaelic Orchestra' We're looking forward to collaborating with him on the next Cartoon Saloon film”.
This event will take place in The People's Park by the River, however it may be moved to an indoor location subject to weather conditions.
