CATHY CARMAN VESSEL |
Friday 24th September - Saturday 27th November 10am - 6pm Tuesday to SaturdayCATHY CARMAN VESSEL Vessel is an exhibition of new work that is the culmination of some years’ exploration of memories using clay as a material by Roscommon based artist Cathy Carman. About the exhibition, the artist writes, “Recently I have been exploring memories and markers in my life. I have been remembering moments that are past. Moments that are caught in the privacy of my own mind. In this exploration my mind feels like a vessel, a pod, which contains these things. It’s an ever changing vessel. And I have been trying to capture in form all those many moments. We are what we think. We are what we remember. We are what we meditate on. The mind is like a form that takes into itself the shape of a thought, yet it is not the thought. The mind is like a vessel that continuously reforms itself, reshapes itself as each moment passes. The pods or vessels I am making are like the mind, as it changes its shape, in each new thought or moment or milestone in life.” Cathy Carman Cathy Carman has made public and private works in stone, bronze, wood and ceramic over many years, and her work is held in many public and private collections. She is a member of Aosdána. The artist will also be using Gallery 3 as a studio for the duration of this exhibition. Preview on Friday 24th September at 5.30pm. All are welcome.

BLASPHEMY |
Saturday 25th September - Saturday 27th November 10am - 6pm Tuesday to Saturday Admission is free to all exhibitions in the galleriesImages considered blasphemous have changed over the centuries. But the response has not. Eliciting extreme reactions from particular sections of society has resulted in much work being destroyed and many artists banished down through the ages. It is clear to see that images considered ‘blasphemous’ still stir very deep and dangerous emotions such as the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy in 2005. What makes an image Blasphemous? In what context is it considered sacrilegious or immoral? Is the introduction of this new legislation in Ireland an indication of a tolerant, pluralist and democratic society befitting of our times? The artists in this exhibition address the issue directly through their individual projects or have already confronted censorship of their work.
Preview on Friday 24th September at 5.30pm. All are welcome. |
