Robin Whitmore
Dream Diary
Thursday 01st February - Saturday 01st December
Throughout 2007, artist Robin Whitmore will be showing his daily Dream Diary above the staircase in the Dock. Viewers are invited to sit on a settee at the foot of the stairs where they will be able to hear the artist's voice giving descriptions of the illustrated dreams that will be projected onto the wall above them. Fourteen dreams will be shown at a time and then updated every fortnight. The Dream Diary at the Dock will display Robin's dreams from 1st January to 31st December 2007.
Parallel to this installation Robin will be running dream-related drawing workshops for the public at different stages of the year. Work based on these events will be displayed and will form another dimension to the exhibition.
Robin Whitmore has been drawing his dreams on and off for years now. The images are produced with the artist's eyes closed, enabling him to focus more closely on the scene depicted. Last year, he began publishing his dream drawings as a weblog that can be viewed at http://www.robinwhitmoredreamdiary.blogspot.com.
Robin Whitmore's work is rooted in drawing. He has tended not to show in galleries, preferring to work in places that are unrelated to the art scene. Starting his career as a portrait artist on the streets in Berlin, he noticed how fascinated people are watching others draw. Much of Robin's work has looked at the potential that drawing has to stimulate and open up dialogue. He has worked in nightclubs or public gatherings where he has asked people to describe a memory or fantasy that he draws and simultaneously projects on a gigantic scale. In this way, the work becomes a kind of collaboration and the actual drawing is like a live performance. He lives in London.
