This playlist which accompanies my exhibition 'Ragged Trousers' is a selection of songs, stories and ways in which musicians and artists have expressed themselves and dealt with situations surrounding labour, oppression and revolt. Music is extremely important to me and informs my practise greatly. I have organised the Ballad Sessions in Charlie Malones pub in Limerick city which takes place once a month and tries to encourage people to learn, sing and share folk music with each other. I think history in music form, is important to a country's heart. I think in these times we live in, it's difficult to not get political when we are faced with a lot of hardship and worry. I often think of Bertolt Brecht when he said :
"In the dark times
Will there also be singing?
Yes, there will also be singing.
About the dark times.” – Bertolt Brecht,1939
My exhibition tries to capture ideologies surrounding house painting, class structures and the increasingly difficult country we inhabit. The songs were all very present with me while making the show. There is also the six songs sang by myself and Sean McKenna ( The Mary Wallopers) at the artist talk/performance which took place as part of 'Ragged Trousers'.
