This Journey

This Journey, a new research project by Dance Artist in Residency and Undercurrent, Directed by Kate Wilson

‘Before I didn’t know where I was going. That’s the hardest part, to figure out where you want to go. But now I know.’

This is an investigation of individual experiences of ‘Journey’ with the ‘Undercurrent’ ensemble. The research will lead towards the development of new ensemble performance.

Whilst ‘Unearth’ considered issues of boundary and physical mobility this new work takes a deeper look into the journeys we take and what they mean for us both metaphorically and physically. We will also consider changing parameters of current contexts, for example how the internet and Google Maps change our ideas about ‘being lost’, whether ‘terra incognita’ is still a concept we can relate to.

I am interested in the role ‘unknown places’ play in our lives and if there is still a necessity to find ourselves ‘lost’, physically as well as metaphorically, to continue to reinvent and discover who we are.

Journey can refer as much to our sense of pathway or trajectory in life, as literal travel. I would like to explore the connections between these two and the role of time and space in this. How geographic journeys manifest for us physically, the shifts in time and space, that are often evasive in our psychological experience of time.

Journeys offer a way of describing the connections between events, discoveries, and places in our lives. They are structures that give us moments of arrival as well as the opportunity for new beginnings. ‘This Journey’ investigates how we use ‘journeys’ in all its forms, to find shape in the flow the unfolding experiences of existence.

The ensemble includes, three performers who are wheelchair users, three young performers and two professional dancers from the UK. They will also work with UK composer and Undercurrent collaborator Olivir Haylet and visual artist and projectionist Milo Cummins. As well as multiple video projections this work includes live feeds from a camera worn by one of the performers creating a truly intimate and immersive experience for the audience.
