About the Artist(s)

Maija Sofia Makela is an artist from rural Galway who works through music, text, performance, and archival research. She is a graduate of Trinity College and a recipient of the 2020 Next Generation Award from the Arts Council of Ireland. Her debut album 'Bath Time', a collection of songs exploring female experiences and shadow histories throughout art, literature and folklore was released in November 2019 through Trapped Animal Records and was nominated for the RTE Choice Award Irish Album of the Year. It centred on electric guitar and voice with additional harp, analogue synth and more experimental instrumentation and was described in the Sunday Times as "quietly breathtaking [...] the arrival of a unique new voice." In 2020 she has performed in the National Concert Hall, Vicar Street and for Other Voices' online Courage series.

Background to the commission

Throughout 2020 we have been lucky to work artists across a range of art forms to develop work that has helped the connection between artists and audiences alive.

The Dock has always had a reputation for programming the very best in music and the series of music commissions that we have established for the latter part of 2020 will certainly maintain that high standard while celebrating the connections between musicians, place and people.

With the ideas of remembrance and celebration in mind we approached three brilliant singers and asked them to compose and record new songs that we will be able to share with you here on our website and across our other online platforms. Our sincere hope is that in the not too distant future we will be able to invite you all back into our beautiful building to enjoy the music in person with us.

We invited Maija Sofia, a musician and writer from rural Galway, to be a part of our Music Commissions Series because of her striking debut 2019 album 'Bath Time that showed the way in which her songs explore female experiences and shadow histories throughout art, history and folklore. We expect her solo work and her collaborations with Eleanor Shanley and Cathy Jordan to result in some beautiful music that we can share and enjoy with you.
