About the residency
Music inspired by Harry Clarke
Composed by Peter O Toole
This year is 90 years since Harry Clarkes passing at the tender age of forty-one. The composer and Musician Peter O Toole been interested in Clarkes stunningly detailed jewel like work, which are so rich in detail and narrative for a number of years .
For this new residency with The Dock Peter will compose music around the stunning narratives to be found in Clarke's church windows around the country. Since the beginning of 2020 Peter has been studying Clarke's work in detail with the intention of visiting some of the windows in towns around Ireland, and responding to these through new compositions. Using Zhong Ruan Bouzouki and Piano he will compose four new songs in response to Clarke's windows, collaborating with musicians Cormac Begley (Concertina) and Maitiú Ó Casaide (Uileann Pipes) to develop new work for film. He will be working with visual artist Margaret Lonergan to develop visuals for the film.
The stories behind the artwork are mostly from the Bible’s ancient stories and themes that pertain modern day emotions and experiences; such as love, betrayal, travel, searching, loss and questioning.
Peter and his collaborators will perform 3 to 4 of these new works for filming at The Dock in late November or broadcast in December 2021. For the recorded performances Peter will be on Piano, Zhong Ruan Bouzouki and Vocal with Cormac Begley on Concertinas and Maitiú Ó Casaide on Uileann Pipes and Violin alongside live projections by Margaret Lonergan
In 2022, as he develops the project further Peter will return to perform the work at The Dock.
