Iconic French Nouvelle Vague director Agnes Varda teams up with artist JR for a road-trip across France, in this moving and playful documentary. Travelling from town to town in JR’s van, repurposed as a gigantic camera, they set about photographing people at home or work, and pasting these images in public spaces.
Deceptively simple in structure, the film expertly weaves the personal and political to creates a moving work of humanist cinema, exemplified by Varda, a democratic, curious and generous spirt, who rolls her eyes at her young collaborator's youthful exuberance. An irresistibly incongruent duo, JR and Varda, have created a moving meditation on friendship, cinema and the power of art on people’s life.
