These will take place outdoors in a covered walled area at The Dock where you can enjoy performances over weekend nights from July 23rd to September 5th.
The Quartet features Clarinetist and Saxophonist Ciaran Wilde, Bassist Dave Mooney with the addition of Michael Behan Guitar Phil McMullen Drums. All the musicians have performed together with various different musical ensembles but this is the first time they come together as a group playing the music they really love to play and are joined by the wonderful and gifted Pia Dunne on vocals. You can expect a mixture of Latin Jazz, Songs from the American Songbook Blues and Jazz Standards in what promises to be an enjoyable and accessible evening of music played by some of Irelands finest working musicians.
Ciaran Wilde began playing Clarinet at the of seven. He studied Clarinet and Saxophone with Tim Hanafin in the Conservatory of Music in Dublin and won two Medals in the Feis Ceol one for Classical Clarinet and one for Jazz Saxophone! He began play professionally at 16 when he toured with Singer Hazel O' Conor on her first Irish tour, over the years he has has continued to perform and record with various different acts ranging from The Waterboys, Sharon Shannon, Tom Robinson, The Pogues, Dr Louis Stewart, Mike Nielson Michael Buckley, Jim Doherty, John Moriarty, as well as The RTE Concert Orchestra and Big Band RTE Symphony Orchestra Ulster Orchestra! He ran the legendary Globe Jazz sessions for a period of 10 years and is founder of the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra. He continues to teach, perform, write and record for various musical settings. He received a First Class Honors Masters in Jazz Improvisation from the DIT Dublin in 2015 and now resides in Carrick on Shannon! He also loves Pike Fishing
Michael Behan has been very active on the Dublin jazz scene for over two decades. During this time hehas held residencies in hotels such at The Shelbourne Hotel and The Burlington hotel as well asperforming in various venues including J.J.Smyth’s, The International bar and Cafe en Seine.He has appeared on Rte television and has performed extensively solo as well as in combos fromduo to quintet playing jazz standards, originals and supporting singers. He has performed regularly with The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra and The Hot House Big Band. As an educator Michael teaches jazz guitar at Waltons New School of Music.
Dave Mooney hails from south Dublin but his musical pursuits have led him far and wide. He received a scholarship to study in Berklee college of Music Boston, from which he holds a BMus, and also a diploma in jazz performance from the London Guild Hall School of Music. A much sought after session musician both in Ireland and abroad, Dave has appeared, performed, and recorded with a vast and varied array of artists in jazz and Latin genres to pop and rock. He has recently completed a second successful European tour with Gavin Friday. He has also performed with Sinead O’Connor, Sarah Brightman, the legendary Ciarán Wilde, Jeff Ramsey (Al Jarreau Group), Dik Evans (former Virgin Prunes), Maud in Cahoots, Sarah Brindell, Honer Heffernan, The Young European Strings, The +55 Samba Collective, Samuel Jackson and lots more.
Phil MacMullan began playing drums/percussion at the age of 12. After completing his BA(Hons) in Philosophy & Classics at UCD he decided to pursue music and studied jazz in Newpark Music centre, where he was awarded a Diploma in jazz performance from The Guildhall school of Music and Drama (honours) in 2002. He participated in The School for Improvised Music (SIM) summer programme in New York in 2005 which included private studies with Tom Rainey, Jim Black, Vijay Iyer, Mark Helias, Tim Berne and Ralph Alessi. Phil has recorded, performed and composed music/collaborated with a diverse variety of Irish and international artists/groups including: Yurodny, Cortisol Quintet, Dan Trueman, Isotope, Louis Stewart, Mark Linnane, Rick Peckham, Florian Ross, Joe O’Callaghan’s Freeplay, Miklós Lukács, Tom Arthurs, Richie Buckley, Hugh Buckley, Myles Drennan, Justin Carroll, Ciaràn Wilde, Mihály Borbély, Tom Arthurs, Sami Moukaddem and Petar Ralchev. Phil has also developed his skills as an educator/music teacher in recent years and was awarded The Professional Master’s degree in Education (PME) from UCD (with honours) in 2016.
Pia Dunne has been performing professionally as a singer, songwriter, composer, arranger and band leader for over fifteen years and has had the pleasure of sharing a stage with such diverse acts as Aslan, Sinead O'Connor, Radio Tarifa, Wally Page, MC Soom T and some of the best jazz musicians in Ireland. Pia has regularly toured the Irish festival circuit and played across Ireland and the UK.
She released her Debut EP in May 2012 to much acclaim with nominations for Best Female Artist, Best Unsigned Artist and Best Album and was shortlisted for Best Soul/Jazz Act in The MRU Music Awards 2012. She performs regularly in many different projects including Pia Dunne and the Eleusians, the Pia Dunne Quartet and the Strawgods. She has composed for and sang with Big Bands and has had numerous previous releases. Her new album is due for release later this year.
