The DOCK commission gave Laura the time and space for ideas to form for a new series of works on paper, incorporating weather for the first time. Rain falls heavily in these new works: flooded fields, submerged bales, and overturned cow-houses look akin to boats in these decidedly damp-looking drawings.
This series called 'The Visitors' will be ongoing and will continue being drawn, on into the rest of the year. (Weather dependant).
The drawings hope to explore the complex environmental issues surrounding agriculture, ecology, travel, and tourism, and the series aims to open up new narratives on how we live, look after, and visit land.
The second part of the work made by Laura is a short story called 'Impending Visitor Protocol' which turned into a calendar. This functional item is produced by a fictional organization called: 'DNDARIV (Dread and Despair Avoidance Regarding Incoming Visitors)' which helps people worldwide in hosting the perfect visit.
Set against the backdrop of climate change, together with contradictions arising from tourism and the environmental impact of this industry, the calendar becomes a go-to tool, assisting with all issues pertaining to both visitors and hosts. Topics covered include: environmental issues, mental health maintenance, exercise, and cleaning tips, together with logistical, financial, and emotional advice.
