Join us for a mask-making workshop where you’ll create your very own Halloween mask using natural materials. Whether you want a fun, mysterious, or scary mask, we’ve got you covered!
Our workshop celebrates Samhain, the ancient festival that gave rise to Halloween. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and was the time when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. Wearing masks was a way to protect against roaming spirits and ghosts but it was also transformative, a way to become a different creature for Halloween night. By creating your own mask, you’re connecting with this rich tradition and adding your personal touch to the celebration.
What will we do?
1. Choose Your Materials: We’ll provide a variety of natural items like leaves, moss, feathers and bones. You can pick what you like best and you can bring your own materials too, if you’d like to.
2. Design Your Mask: Use the materials to make a unique mask. You can make it look spooky, silly, or mysterious—whatever you imagine!
3. Crafting Time: We’ll show you how to put everything together. You can glue, tie, paint and arrange your materials to bring your mask to life.
Who will lead the workshops?
Ciarán MacAoidh and Nessa O Brolchain both come from backgrounds of craft, art, folklore and history. With years of experience in mask and costume making for arts and heritage projects, they bring their unique expertise to this workshop. Their most recent work includes Pagan Rave, a performance collective based in Dingle.
