Loop-de-Loops is a two-day workshop exploring animation basics for children, aged 6—12 years, using only paper and pens. By making our very own animation, young artists will explore image making, how to collect and arrange pictures, how films are made, and craft skills.
The two workshops take place Saturday 18 and 25 November, 11—12.30pm and attendance is required on both Saturdays. Over the course of two Saturday workshops, we will collect pictures we like from the world around us (textures, colours, patterns and shapes) by drawing, copying or collage. We will then use these pictures to create looping animations, and then join them all up into one big movie!
We will learn how to make animation at home with simple materials like pencils and paper, how to design characters, visual storytelling, and creative problem-solving as we work together to bring our ideas to life. The workshop ends with a mini-screening of the animations. All materials will be provided. Please feel free to bring along any art materials that you like to use.
This workshop is kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.
Fergal Brennan is an art teacher and award-winning animation artist based in Leitrim. He makes drawings, documentaries and installations out of materials rather than stories — materials like rubbish, sound, dance, and photocopies. His work has been exhibited at international film and art festivals and is currently funded by The Arts Council to write a book on experimental animation for kids.
