Composer Siobhán Cleary will lead an educational workshop based on her piece “Ondine”, working with a group of pupils from Scoil Mhuire who will compose and perform their own composition alongside the acclaimed musicians of Evlana.

Evlana is a flexible group with programmes ranging from smaller ensemble groups to a sinfonietta sized orchestra. It was founded by composer, Siobhán Cleary in 2015. Evlana places contemporary music at the heart of its programming and provides an opportunity for Ireland’s most accomplished performers and composers to produce and perform their work.

The Dock was delighted to have Evlana Ensemble perform Ondine: Ravel and Beyond 15th October at 8pm.

Taking its inspiration from Ondine by Maurice Ravel, a landmark work for solo piano, Ondine: Ravel and Beyond, offers Irish audiences an opportunity to hear a rich palette of chamber works written in the years following the first performance of the composer’s tour de force in 1908, in addition to more recent works similarly inspired by composers Kaija Saariaho, Toru Takemitsu and Irish composer Siobhán Cleary.

About the Artist(s)

Siobhán Cleary

Based in Boyle, Co Roscommon Siobhán Cleary’s music has been performed and broadcasted throughout the world. Her concert music has been performed and broadcast widely in Europe, Australia and USA and much of her music has been released on CD. Siobhan’s film work embraces many genres from restored art house movies and contemporary docudramas to thriller and sci-fi features. Her opera 'Vampirella' based on Angela Carter’s radio play was premiered in Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin in 2017 to much critical acclaim and a sold out house for its four night run. It has since been optioned as a film and will be going into production later this year under the title 'The Lady of the House of Love'.

Siobhán studied music in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth and completed a Composition Masters at Queen’s University Belfast. She also has a Masters in music and media technology from Trinity College, Dublin. In 1994 she attended the Siena summer school where she studied film music under Ennio Morricone and concert music under Franco Donatoni. She also participated in a film scoring course under Don Brandon Ray, (former music supervisor of CBS Television and composer for Hawaii-Five O from 1968 to 1980). Siobhán has received several commissions from Radio Telefís Éireann (RTÉ), the Irish Public Service Broadcasting Organisation. Her orchestral work, Threads (1992 rev.1994), was selected by Vienna Modern Masters for performance at the Second International Festival of New Music for Orchestra in Olomouc in the Czech Republic, and was later released on CD. Other orchestral works include ‘Alchemy’ (2001) and Cokaygne (2008) both commissioned by RTÉ and performed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.
