Nature Nurture

Online Exhibition

13 June 2020
NATURE NURTURE virtual2 620 430 90 c1

Launched for Cruinniú na nÓg, June 13th 2020

As we all know County Leitrim is steeped in a tradition of arts and culture and is one of the most un-spoilt, beautiful counties in Ireland. In March, The Dock sent out an open call to young people in Leitrim and the surrounding region (Roscommon, Sligo, Longford, and Cavan) to encourage them to celebrate and think about the beauty of their local areas and to invite them to participate in a virtual exhibition titled Nature Nurture.

The resulting exhibition, Nature Nurture was launched on The Dock website on Saturday 13th June to celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg 2020. Recent times and events have highlighted the universal need for us to protect and celebrate the natural environment and this exhibition has given young people a platform to voice that need.

The exhibition, Nature Nurture is young people's response to the importance of the natural world in all its forms and describes their relationship to it. There were three age categories of 7-9, 10-14, and 15-18 years, and the exhibition was curated by artist David Smith and Laura Mahon, Visual Arts & Education Manager at The Dock.

This new project created an exhibition space both virtual and real, for young artists to show their artwork in a highly regarded public gallery. At a later date, a select number of young people (Young Exhibitors) will showcase their original work at The Dock. These selected Young Exhibitors will have the chance to participate in virtual critiques/workshops with our curators using social media/Zoom and other platforms.

Work was selected and judged based on artistic merit and how it responded to the suggested themes. Participants from another of our projects, the Collective Producers, also had a curator/technician role in organising the virtual and real exhibition.

About Cruinniú na nÓg

This project is part of Cruinniú na nÓg, a flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme’s Creative Youth Plan to enable the creative potential of children and young people. The inaugural Cruinniú na nÓg took place on 23rd June 2018 with over 500 events taking place in cities, towns and villages across the country. This initiative funded by Creative Ireland Programme through Leitrim County Council was to encourage young people to explore their localities and to develop and use their creative ideas to reflect what they found.
