Leitrim Village ICA was set up ten years ago to give women an opportunity to connect and to offer support to all women in our community. Through co-operative effort, they keep education and lifelong learning of traditional Irish culture and language alive.
Leitrim Village ICA has monthly meetings and organises guest speakers and activities, along with a quarterly Federation meeting with other guilds in Leitrim. They also have outings, both locally and further afield. They participate in initiatives such as 'Go for Life', promoting activity as people age, organising classes such as pilates.
Outings are also an important event for the group; the last tour the group went on was to Belfast to visit the Titanic Museum. At present, they are undertaking a six-week course in painting which is being held in the Leitrim Village Community Centre.
The challenge for the group was to set up a 'Still Life' and create a painting based on the objects they had before them. The group were guided through demonstration on how to set up a composition, how to observe it, and how to use materials, focusing on shade and light in order to create shape and form. They were taught how to really observe their objects and to transfer this onto a canvas.
The finished paintings will be exhibited in the Jury Room café at The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon from the Thursday 29 October until 21 November. The café will be open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm, except 26 and 31 October. Free admission and all welcome.
