Street Arts Training

Mayo Sligo Leitrim Local Creative Youth Partnership (LCYP)

This training held by Mayo Sligo Leitrim Local Creative Youth Partnership (LCYP) and supported by The Dock on September 20th, will support youth workers to gain practical and creative skills in street art techniques when working with young people.

This practical, hands-on training aims to equip youth workers with new skills and facilitation methods to support their young people in using visual art for self-expression and advocacy.

Youth workers will develop their creative toolkit in digital and street arts, exploring techniques in stencilling, spray painting and online tools. Participants will be provided with inspiration on how these techniques can be used in a variety of settings, e.g., poster campaigns or upscaled, outdoor murals.

Street art is an engaging way for young people to gain confidence and self-determination. Through creating effective visual pieces, they become more connected to themselves and the issues that affect them and develop their own individual voice. The artwork itself then goes on to inspire the audience, young and old, to take action and see the artists in a positive light.

Mayo Sligo Leitrim Local Creative Youth Partnership (LCYP) brings together a local network of organisations to provide out-of-school creative activities for young people. The target audience for all LCYP programmes are children and young people in local communities in out-of-school settings with a particular focus on those who are experiencing marginalisation or disadvantage.

The LCYPs sphere of focus goes beyond that of the arts and includes cultural and creative activity in all spheres (arts, heritage, STEAM, entrepreneurship etc.)

About the Artist(s)

Helen O’Keeffe

Helen has worked in participatory and youth arts for about ten years. She has an MA in Art & Design Education from CCAD and considerable experience and training in art, design and youth & community work. Her practice has been largely shaped by her experience on MTU’s Creativity & Change course in 2010, seeing her join the staff team in 2015. She is also a co-host of mobile arts facility, Splattervan, and art teacher at alternative secondary education setting, Cork Life Centre. She is passionate about the potential of all young people and the power of art as a catalyst for change on personal, societal and global levels.

Claire Coughlan

Claire is an arts educator from Cork, engaging with young people and adults on creative projects and participatory programmes for over twelve years. She feels most strongly about nurturing creative expression in teenagers on the fringes of traditional systems – those in ‘hard to reach’ places, such as outside of mainstream education or in state care, direct provision or criminal justice settings, a passion which has found her working with a rich variety of organisations, artists and state agencies throughout Ireland and beyond with arts facility, Splattervan, which she set up in 2013. She has a particular focus on street art and creative tools that give young people a public platform to be seen and heard. Claire designs and delivers creative experiences, training and events as part of the staff team at Creativity & Change MTU Crawford College of Art & Design.
