Every year, the National Gallery of Ireland, together with dozens of museums, galleries, libraries, and cultural organisations all over the island of Ireland, encourages people to get drawing with a jam-packed day of free events for people of all ages.

This year at The Dock, we embarked on a giant drawing world of exploration with artist Andy Parsons. We tackled tasks like 'How can you make your hand bigger than your entire body?' or 'sketch a tree-sized leaf.'
The drawing workshop investigates size, scale, dimensions, and perspective. Families, artists, and children experimented with collage, charcoal, ink, and chalk on enormous sheets of paper, as well as sketching with bamboo sticks, creating an immersive room of drawings.

About the Artist(s)

Andy Parson's practice combines working in community contexts with making drawings, sculpture, and paintings. Projects have focused on people and places, and on activities where people work together and help each other. He has worked in a Community Care setting for older people, Mental Health Inpatients, and a community boat building project in the Sligo docks. Recently completed two major projects; ‘Conversations in Portrait’ a virtual portrait project with older people across Ireland, and a two-year residency at Sligo University Hospital for The Model Home of The Niland Collection, which culminated in a major solo exhibition at The Model in Autumn 2021 entitled ‘Patience’. In the summer of 2022, Andy will exhibit a new body of sculpture, drawings and paintings in Tokyo, Japan. He has received several significant awards, including the Pollock Krasner Foundation Award. Exhibited internationally, with solo shows in London and Tokyo.
