Saturday Studios and Creative Producers were created as a project to examine how young people interacted with different art forms. Workshops were delivered online for eight weeks during Spring 2021, and the programme was aimed at transition-year students and children aged between 6 and 13 years.
Three artists from The Dock’s education team, David Smith, Stephanie Pawula, and Wayne O’Connor developed a series of workshops tailored to the student's ages. The artists draw on their own practices and skillsets, with workshops delivered on painting, music, story-telling, and digital drawing.
Transition-year students from Carrick-on-Shannon Community school attended online workshops during school hours, with each artist working with two groups each week.
In 'From Soundscape to Soundtrack,' the musician, Stephanie Pawula encouraged participants to create unique soundscapes, through the use of field recordings, integrating voice, the sounds of everyday objects and instruments within their soundtracks, and this work was uploaded to a digital playlist on SoundCloud.
Artist Wayne O'Connor led the students as they had their first experiences in building fictional, fantasy worlds through a series of workshops entitled, ‘Worlds of Adventures.' Wayne used myths and legends to inspire the participants to create rich narratives within fantastical landscapes which were inhabited by mythical creatures and characters. At the end of the workshops, the students' work was compiled into a digital art book called 'World of Wonders'
Visual artist David Smith developed a series of workshops, entitled ‘100 Winter Colours,’ which created a collaborative painting project with the students, exploring the process of mixing colour and using the natural environment as a source of inspiration. Participants learned how to work with digital media to enhance their work.
