a consequence of – a breather of air a solo exhibition by Maud Cotter was the second iteration of a body of work developed through three leading venues over three years; The Limerick City Gallery of Art, in 2018, The Dock, 2019, and Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane in 2020.

In a consequence of – a breather of air the gallery becomes a mercurial landscape of the mind, a place where matter and consciousness, appropriately mingle. This is a body of work which asserts the importance of such a duo of forces. It is both cerebrally presented and fully existing emotionally, connecting our bodies with our minds. This kind of interactive intelligence is presented as a totality of force, one that is necessary to intuit and explore changing spatiality and understandings. The work seeks to unsettle the conventional account of reality, the sensorial cul-de-sac spun by corporate values, so vividly and forcefully delivered to our minds through contemporary culture. Material reality is one of compliance and contradiction, one in which no rule applies. In this world of upheaval, lies a consequence of – a breather of air, an enactment of will within the agency of matter.

Macrophysicality finds its point of incision; conscious and insightful, it enters the molecularly complex world of the object. These actions orchestrate new formation in that amorphous bank of matter behind appearance – consciousness modelling form. Interiority within an exterior condition, “apparently arbitrarily grown up; governing different sets of properties at different levels of abstraction; pockets of great precision; large parcels of qualitative maxims resisting precise formulation; erratic overlaps; here and there, once in a while, corners that line up, but mostly ragged edges; and always the cover of law just loosely attached to the jumbled world of material things.”(i)a consequence of – a breather of air is the second iteration of a body of work as an assertion of autonomous practice, a flow which follows a natural course of development through the three venues: Limerick City Gallery of Art - 2018, The Dock - 2019, and Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane – 2020.
