Connecting Through Heritage - Exploring Leitrim’s Built, Natural and Cultural Heritage
Whether we are Leitrim natives or have found our way to this lovely county and now call it home, the county's rich heritage is a part of each of our stories and worth celebrating. The Leitrim Heritage office is currently working alongside a number of groups around the county to celebrate different aspects of Leitrim’s built, natural and cultural heritage.
The Leitrim Larks
Leitrim has a rich and varied tradition of song which has been passed down through generations. While some of these songs remain well known, many are no longer performed and survive only in manuscripts and archives.
Led by renowned traditional singer Fionnuala Maxwell, the Leitrim Larks Project aims to celebrate, rediscover, and revive traditional songs from Leitrim by engaging both established singers across the County and by engaging and facilitating individual members of the public from across the County to discover and sing these Leitrim songs.
On the night you will enjoy performances by Fionnuala Maxwell with a number of the singers and a cellist from the project.
The Leitrim Sweathouse Project
The evening will also include an illustrated talk by Aidan Harte, archaeologist and coordinator of the Leitrim Sweathouse Project, a community heritage initiative researching Sweathouses across the county.
Starting in 2021 and continuing the year, the project has seen significant and enthusiastic participation from volunteer researchers, while training sessions and heritage events were well-received and attended. At the start of last year there were 98 sweathouse sites in Co. Leitrim and over the course of the project a further 12 were identified, and it was also found that sweathouses were more extensive than previously thought, having been distributed right across the county, from Kinlough to south of Mohill.

So join us for an evening of music with the Leitrim Larks Project and more insight into a truly fascinating part of Leitrim’s history with the Sweathouse Project.
