This Summer, sound artist and instrument-designer, Ed Devane worked with students from the four schools that make up The Dock’s Collective Producers. Students from schools in counties Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford worked with Ed on a series of funded workshops to create an innovative musical instrument, using the cylindrical form as their starting point.
The final piece incorporates the work from each of the schools in a collaborative sculptural installation – a physical and musical interactive installation comprising of fifteen separate cylindrical instruments, which will react and interact through touch free sensors, where visitors to The Dock will be able to interact with the installation in the performance space to create sounds via the various touch-free sensors (IR distance sensors, capacitive sensors, light and heat sensors etc).
The four secondary schools are Carrick-on -Shannon Community School and teacher Deirdre Gillen, Ballymahon Vocational School and teacher Anne O'Reilly, Abbey Community College, Boyle and teacher Aengus Martin, Drumshanbo Vocational School and teacher Eugene Rooney are part of our Collective Producers in Schools. The young participants worked with mechanical and electronics such as Arduino-controlled beaters, blowers, a bowing mechanism and acoustic integrated speakers, to create an interactive sonic art installation.
