International Women’s Day celebrations
We celebrated International Women’s Day with an evening of some of Leitrim’s creative leaders, who talked about the rich traditions of the County and the people and things that have inspired their creative lives and journeys
Cllr Sinead Guckian, politician and Artist, who is a native of Drumsna and graduated from Sligo IT with a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art and is a voluntary director at The Leitrim Design House introduced the following speakers.
Carole Coleman is broadcaster and journalist with RTE and is the author of two books on American politics and culture: Alleluia America: An Irish Journalist in Bush Country (2005) and The Battle for the White House (2008).
Edwina Guckian is a dancer, teacher and producer. She learned Sean Nós dancing from her mother and the local dancers of Leitrim and Roscommon. Her style is greatly influenced by the music she grew up listening to the music of Leitrim
Dolores Walshe has won many awards for her writing; she lives and writes in Leitrim. She was short-listed for the RTÉ P.J.O’Connor Play Award 2014. She has had plays published by Carysfort Press, University College Dublin, and Syracuse University, She was short-listed for the Merriman, and Fish International Short Story Awards 2013 and is a former prize winner of the Francis Mac Manus Short Story Award.
Eleanor Shanley hails from Keshcarrigan in County Leitrim in the North West of Ireland. She still spends much of her time there. Eleanor grew up listening to music. Her mother’s family were all very musical and childhood was spent learning songs from her extended family.
