The Dock will host an open storytelling event reflecting on the history and transformation of the former courthouse in Carrick-on-Shannon. Gathering Local Stories: The Courthouse Through the Years invites the community to share their personal connections and memories of the courthouse, offering a unique opportunity to explore its evolving role in the town's heritage. Join us for a light lunch on Saturday 26 April, 12—2pm in the Jury Room café.
Led by Laurie MacLeod — granddaughter of Tom Murphy, the former courthouse caretaker and member of the Carrick Fire Brigade in the early to mid-20th century — the event will feature stories from local residents, as well as an open-floor session where attendees can share their own experiences. Contributions may include verbal storytelling, as well as physical photos, documents, and memorabilia for viewing during the event, creating a vibrant tapestry of community histories. A recently discovered cine film will be screened throughout, showcasing both the courthouse and Carrick-on-Shannon in 1969.
This informal and welcoming event aims to foster conversation around the courthouse's significance, its decline into dereliction, and its recent transformation by Leitrim County Council into a thriving arts centre. Participants will be encouraged to discuss ways to preserve and honour collected stories for future generations. With the community’s rich history at the heart of the event, it promises to be a memorable afternoon of connection, reflection, and shared heritage.
Admission is free and booking is required. Gathering Local Stories: The Courthouse Through the Years is kindly supported by Leitrim County Council Arts Office and Creative Ireland. For more information, please contact Jonathan Harte at jonathan.harte@leitrimcoco.ie.
