In this one-day Masterclass you will be introduced to two types of Traditional Japanese book making methods; the Accordion book and the Japanese four-hole binding.
Participants will learn the thorough process of making these books; from understanding the book structure, the materials involved, preparation of paper, folding, binding, making the book cover and stitching/ assembling the books. Participants will also learn through demonstrations how these traditional book making techniques can be translated into a range of contemporary and personalized designs, as well as how one's creative thoughts can be applied into making these books.
This masterclass is suitable for both professional artists and creative practitioners looking to develop their practice.
What to bring along to the workshop;
Participants may bring along pen and paper/ notebook for any note taking.
An Gee Chan (b. 1987, Hong Kong) received her M.A. in Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art (2011) and acquired a B.A. in Illustration and Animation from Kingston University in the UK (2009). Certificate in Conservation and Preservation of Books and Documents (2019).
An Gee Chan, is an visual artist and a former lecturer in printmaking and drawing at the Hong Kong Baptist University, Academy of Visual Arts. An Gee has actively organised workshops, art exchange and exhibitions experiences for her students during her teaching from 2013 to 2022.
Justin Larkin (b. 1984, Dublin, Ireland) received his MA in printmaking from the Royal College of Art London (2011) and acquired BA in printmaking from the National College of Art and Design in Ireland (2009).
Justin is a visual artist and a former part time lecturer in printmaking, painting and drawing at the Hong Kong Baptist University, Academy of Visual Arts. Outside teaching, Justin held printmaking and traditional painting workshops regularly at the printmaking studio in Hong Kong.
