  • This event is part of the Platform Commissions presented in partnership with EVA International – Ireland's biennial of contemporary art. Our thanks to Mindful Massage Therapy.

Taking the shape of a scripted massage treatment performed by Janie Doherty, wet HEAT sweats without scent by Phillip McCrilly maps a history of intimacy and vulnerability against the backdrop of sectarian conflict, whilst speculating on potential forms of promiscuous care in the aftermath of The Troubles.

This performance began as an extended research project, aiming to historically renegotiate the queer body within a contemporary revision of conflict in the North, but over time became a more reflective and cathartic attempt by the artist in coming to terms with his own troubles-related trauma from his childhood.

Each 1-1 session includes a consultation, back and shoulder massage, complimentary refreshments, and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Please be aware that the performance explores adult themes and the treatment is not recommended for people who have recently undergone surgery.

A list of ingredients will be made available for those who have any allergy concerns or dietary requirements. For any other questions or information, please email kevin@wet-heat.com

A limited number of spaces are available. Participants will be selected from an open call. To register interest, please fill our the consultation form stating your availability by Friday 29 March, 5pm. Successful applicants will be notified shortly after.

About the artist

Phillip McCrilly is an artist and chef. A founding member of the FRUIT SHOP artist collective and currently studying an alternative MA in Art & Food with the Gramounce, he is interested in the transgressive and interdisciplinary possibilities of food, hospitality and education. Considering cruising and foraging as likeminded deviant practices, his current research is centred around queer collective acts of land and property reclamation. Recent projects include Irish Modernisms (CCA Derry~Londonderry, 2021); and Jaunt (commissioned by Catalyst Arts and Goethe Institut London, 2021).
