Lettering and mural artist Vanessa Power introduced The Collective Producers to the vibrant world of sign painting—an expressive art form that blends traditional craft with bold, contemporary design.
Vanessa Power, originally from Dublin, is now a Leitrim-based artist working under the name Signs of Power. Her hand-painted murals and signs are known for their strong typographic style and visual impact. She has created public artworks across Ireland and internationally, celebrating the art of lettering in modern urban spaces.
This workshop built on The Collective Producers’ previous creative explorations, including their collaboration with sound artist Eimear Reidy. It encouraged participants to reflect on identity, place, and visual storytelling.
The project began with participants capturing photos of the signs that shape daily life in their local areas. Participants considered the design, history, and cultural significance of these visual markers before moving into hands-on practice.
Guided by Vanessa, each participant learned traditional sign-painting techniques and created their own unique letterforms. They then designed and painted personal signs using a limited colour palette to create a visually cohesive group of artworks.
The lyric “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac served as a shared theme—offering a powerful phrase through which to explore self-expression, style, and meaning. The resulting works are displayed here in The Dock’s Jury Room Café and will remain on view until the end of the summer.
